Restaurants: Stop Making Customers Hunt for Your Menu and Hours

Your restaurant's website visitors want two things: what you serve and when you're open. Most restaurant sites bury both.

I reviewed 50 restaurant websites last month. Here's what I found:

  • 34 had their menu as a PDF (half didn't load on mobile)
  • 12 had hours buried in the footer in tiny text
  • 8 had outdated holiday hours still showing
  • 3 had no hours listed at all

And every single one of them wondered why they weren't getting more online traffic converting to reservations.

What Visitors Actually Want

When someone lands on a restaurant website, they have a decision to make in about 15 seconds: eat here, or somewhere else.

That decision depends on three things:

  1. What's on the menu — not a 4-page PDF, just "do they have what I want?"
  2. Are they open right now — not "check our Google listing," right now on this page
  3. Can I book or walk in — what's the next step?

If any of these require more than one click, you're losing people. Not to competitors with better food — to competitors with better answers.

The PDF Menu Problem

Chefs love detailed menus. Customers love scannable answers.

When someone searches "Italian restaurant near me" at 7 PM, they don't want to download a PDF and pinch-zoom on their phone. They want to know: do you have gluten-free pasta? Is there a kids' menu? What's the price range?

A chatbot that can answer "Do you have vegetarian options?" with a clear yes and a few highlights does more for conversion than the most beautifully designed PDF menu.

Hours Are Harder Than You Think

"We're open Tuesday through Sunday, 11-3 and 5-10."

Simple, right? Until someone visits on a Monday and doesn't see that you're closed. Or visits at 3:30 and doesn't know you reopen at 5. Or it's a holiday and your hours are different.

The question "Are you open right now?" is deceptively complex. And it's the most common question restaurant websites fail to answer clearly.

The Fix Is Simpler Than a Menu Redesign

You don't need to rebuild your website. You need your top 10 questions answered instantly:

  • Hours (including holidays)
  • Menu highlights and dietary options
  • Reservation process
  • Parking
  • Private events / large groups
  • Dress code
  • Kids welcome?
  • Delivery options
  • Wait times on busy nights
  • Allergen information

Put these in a chat widget. Let visitors ask naturally. The restaurant that answers "Are you open right now?" in 2 seconds beats the one that makes you scroll the footer every time.

Your food might be incredible. But if nobody can figure out when you're open, they'll never taste it.
